A promising Magic item can be worth keeping because of the modifiers already on it. The ordinary Regal Orb addresses that situation: it upgrades the item to Rare while preserving its current modifiers. The decision begins with whether those existing affixes deserve to remain part of your crafting plan.
The retention route from Magic to Rare
The PoE 2 Wiki describes a Regal Orb as upgrading a Magic item to a Rare item and adding one modifier. Its help text explicitly says current modifiers are retained and a new one is added. Retention is the key distinction; the new modifier is not a selected or guaranteed build improvement.
Consider a hypothetical Magic base whose current affixes already solve a specific equipment need. Regal offers a way to carry them into the Rare stage. Before taking that route, check the base itself and how the item fits your equipment, rather than treating the change in rarity as proof that it will be your best option.
Why Alchemy is a different branch
The current Orb of Alchemy description accepts Normal or Magic items and produces a Rare with four random modifiers. On a Magic target, the original modifiers are not retained. Choosing between these currencies therefore involves preservation versus replacement, not merely choosing two interchangeable upgrades. The Regal versus Alchemy guide explains that fork.
Specify the currency you actually intend
Review the PoE 2 currency listing for the correct league or realm, quantity and ordinary Regal Orb selection. Greater and Perfect variants and Omen interactions are outside this default explanation and need separate checks. The cover is a catalog composition rather than a gameplay tooltip, and it does not establish target eligibility or the extra modifier you will receive. Keep the existing item details available while comparing the listing with your plan.
