Disenchant or Salvage in PoE 2? Regal Shards, Sockets and Item Loss

Disenchanting and salvaging destroy equipment for different outputs. Learn how Rare items, sockets, quality and jewellery change the decision, why inserted augments are not refunded, and which Wiki shard counts need checking in the client.

Disenchant a discarded Rare item when you want the Regal Shard output described by the community Wiki; salvage eligible socketed or quality equipment when you want the corresponding salvage materials. These are different, irreversible destruction routes. This guide is for players who have already decided an item is unwanted and need to choose its final destination. You cannot disenchant the item first and then salvage the same equipment, and salvaging does not refund augments inserted into it.

Before choosing either route, confirm that the item is genuinely disposable. A useful replacement, a crafting candidate or equipment holding an augment you want to retain should not be treated as anonymous scrap.

What the two destruction routes actually reward

The Wiki’s disenchanting section describes destroying non-Normal rarity items for crafting currency shards and explicitly calls the process irreversible. Its current Rare item description gives one Regal Shard, or two for an item with six or more modifiers. Those counts are version sensitive community documentation, not independent official verification.

The Salvage Bench page instead documents one Artificer’s Shard per socket, alongside quality based salvage. A socket is therefore relevant to a different output than the item’s Rare rarity. Having both properties creates a choice, not permission to collect both routes from the same destroyed item.

Discard candidate Disenchant consideration Salvage consideration
Rare equipment without sockets or quality Regal Shard route; check modifier count No socket or quality based output identified here
Rare equipment with sockets Rare rarity still supports the shard comparison Wiki lists Artificer’s Shards per socket
Eligible quality equipment Non-Normal rarity matters for disenchanting Inspect quality material output before destroying
Jewellery, even with quality Check non-Normal rarity and actual output Wiki says jewellery cannot be salvaged

Example: a plain unwanted Rare

Suppose you have a hypothetical Rare armour piece with no sockets and no quality. You have compared it against your equipment and decided not to keep it. For that item, the documented Rare disenchant output is the relevant currency shard branch; there is no socket or quality reason to choose salvage in this example.

The distinction between one and two Regal Shards depends on the Wiki’s modifier count condition. Do not substitute the number of visible text lines for a verified modifier count. A modifier can be presented in ways that make casual line counting unreliable, so confirm the item details and any displayed output rather than guessing.

The Regal Orb page states that a stack of ten Regal Shards becomes a Regal Orb. That explains why the shard is relevant to later crafting. It does not show that disenchanting is always financially better than selling for gold.

Example: the same Rare, now with sockets

Now imagine an unwanted Rare equipment piece with two sockets. Under the Wiki’s one Artificer’s Shard per socket rule, the socket based salvage component would be two Artificer’s Shards. Its Rare status still makes disenchanting relevant, so choose the material you actually need rather than assuming the socketed item must go to the bench.

This is a mechanical comparison, not a market valuation. The local research does not establish current prices, exchange rates or the value of your gold needs. Use the currency stash budget guide to identify the resource you are short of without turning an unpriced output comparison into a profit claim.

Most importantly, inspect what is inside the sockets. The Salvage Bench page explicitly says salvaging does not return socketed augments. Destroying the host equipment is not an extraction service, even when the sockets themselves generate shards.

Quality does not make every item salvageable

For eligible equipment with quality, inspect the applicable quality material output before committing. This guide does not turn the Wiki’s version sensitive quality conversion rules into a universal numerical promise. A quality percentage by itself is insufficient if the item category is excluded.

Jewellery and gems are the useful counterexamples: the Wiki says neither can be salvaged, even if they have quality. For a hypothetical unwanted quality Rare ring, do not plan around receiving quality salvage merely because the percentage is visible. Assess the disenchant option and actual client eligibility instead.

If the bench itself is unavailable, the Wiki links its unlock to Finding the Forge in Act 1, including returning the Smithing Tools to Renly. That is a progression check, distinct from an item being ineligible after the bench is unlocked.

Set up a final inspection, not a bulk habit

Separate candidates into keep and destroy before opening the disposal interaction. Within the destroy group, compare rarity, sockets, quality and inserted augments. Read any displayed output or confirmation, especially when your client’s wording differs from a remembered shard rule.

The inventory and loot filter guide can help keep important candidates visible before this final step. Visibility is only preparation, however; it does not make a destructive click reversible. Stop if you are uncertain whether an item is an upgrade or still holds something valuable.

Disenchant and salvage FAQ

Can I obtain both outputs from one item?

No. The Wiki says disenchanted or salvaged items cannot be reobtained. Pick the destruction route before committing; the first operation removes the equipment needed for the other.

Will salvaging return the augment I inserted?

No. The documented salvage rule explicitly excludes returning socketed augments. If preserving an inserted augment matters to your decision, do not proceed on the assumption that the bench refunds it.

Does every Rare give two Regal Shards?

No. The researched Wiki describes one normally and two at six or more modifiers. Treat that as a version sensitive rule to check in the client, not a promise based on rarity alone or the number of displayed text lines.
