To start WoW Retail, use a Battle.net account, install World of Warcraft through Blizzard’s Battle.net Desktop App, and select Retail rather than a Classic product. You can begin with the free trial through character level 20. Continuing beyond trial restrictions requires subscription or game time; accessing Midnight also requires the expansion entitlement. These are separate checks, not interchangeable purchases.
Choose Retail before choosing a character
Retail and Classic are different product choices. A friend saying they play World of Warcraft does not identify which version you should install. Ask specifically whether they mean current Retail or a named Classic version before downloading or arranging a session together.
The official getting-started page provides Blizzard’s download and access path for Windows and Mac. It also explicitly excludes Classic from the free trial. Use the current Retail product selection in the launcher rather than assuming any entry containing Warcraft leads to the same game.
If your goal is simply to learn movement, combat, and quest interaction, begin there. You do not need to settle your eventual group role before confirming that the correct game launches. Once inside, the distinction between classes and specializations becomes the next useful decision.
Set up the account and installation deliberately
- Sign in to your existing Battle.net account if you have one. Creating another account is not a prerequisite for using the Retail trial.
- Install or open the official Battle.net Desktop App, then locate World of Warcraft.
- Choose the Retail product rather than a Classic version. If multiple WoW accounts are available, confirm which one you intend to use.
- Install through Blizzard’s official route and launch that selection.
- Check access status on the selected account before buying anything to resolve a restriction.
Keep the Battle.net account and the selected WoW account conceptually separate. A successful launcher login establishes that you can authenticate; it does not establish that the particular WoW account has active time or Midnight ownership. Reinstalling files is not a substitute for checking those entitlements.
Separate the three access questions
| Question | What to check | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Can I try Retail? | Free-trial access on the selected account | Access beyond trial restrictions |
| Can I continue beyond the trial? | Active subscription or non-recurring game time | Midnight ownership |
| Can I play Midnight content? | Midnight entitlement plus active time | Every regional bundle has identical contents |
Level 20 is the trial limit, not Retail’s maximum character level. The official new-player guide explains the trial and says accounts without active subscription or game time return to trial status. That does not mean existing higher-level characters are deleted.
Before purchasing, use your region’s current official offer and read its contents. Avoid treating a quoted price from another region, a friend’s old bundle, or an expansion name as a complete description of what your account receives. This guide does not infer every intermediate expansion entitlement from the access distinction.
Apply the checklist to three common situations
New player testing combat: Assume you have never played and only want to see whether movement and questing appeal to you. Install Retail and begin with the trial. Explore the available starting experience before deciding whether broader access serves an actual goal. Buying Midnight first is not necessary merely to answer whether you enjoy basic play.
Returning player with an inaccessible character: Assume the launcher opens, but your old higher-level character cannot continue normal play. Confirm the Battle.net account, selected WoW account, Retail product, and active time in that order. A visible character is not evidence that game time remains active, and an access restriction alone does not establish corrupted installation files.
Player joining friends in Midnight: Assume your friends explicitly mean Retail Midnight. Check both the expansion entitlement and active subscription or game time on the account you will use. Having one does not establish the other. Also agree on what you will do together; owning the expansion is not a promise that every activity immediately becomes available.
Resolve the next problem without buying blindly
Write down the exact restriction you encounter and where it appears. An account-access message, an unavailable character, and a missing quest objective describe different problems. Once you can enter the game, use the quest log and map workflow for navigation rather than interpreting every confusing objective as an entitlement issue.
For a purchase-related problem, compare the selected account’s status with the official offer you intended to use. Preserve the error wording when asking Blizzard for help. Do not buy a second copy or create another account merely because the first troubleshooting attempt was inconclusive.
Frequently asked questions
Is the level 20 trial the full Retail level cap?
No. It is an access boundary for the trial. Character progression beyond trial restrictions and the game’s overall maximum level are different concepts. Use level 20 to understand trial access, not to judge the scope of the full game.
Does buying Midnight replace a subscription?
No. The official start page separates expansion ownership from subscription or non-recurring game time. Check both for the selected WoW account when your goal is Midnight content, and read the regional offer rather than assuming what a bundle includes.
Should I create a new account when returning?
Not as the first response to restricted access. Start with the existing account, confirm the WoW account selection and Retail client, then inspect active time and expansion entitlement. That sequence keeps an account-selection mistake from becoming an unnecessary purchase.
