WoW Edit Mode: Move Frames and Save a Layout Without Changing Your Build

Use Edit Mode to rearrange your WoW Retail interface, find selectable frames, and preserve a usable layout. Follow a small-change workflow that keeps imported layouts, character builds, and equipment choices separate while you check readability in ordinary play.

Original LootGo editorial diagram, not an official image, game screenshot or exact interface: CLASS, ROLE, SKILLS and GEAR arranged around a character concept; blue and gold radial layout.

Open Edit Mode from the Esc menu to rearrange supported WoW Retail interface elements. Select a frame, adjust its available settings, and save the layout before returning to play. If a frame cannot be selected, first check whether its editing option is enabled rather than assuming the entire interface is locked.

This is for players whose action bars, party information, or objective tracker are awkward to read. You are changing the heads-up display, not your talents, equipment, or combat role. Start with a layout you can recognize, then make a few deliberate changes instead of importing a completely unfamiliar screen during a group activity.

Identify the information you actually need to move

Write down the immediate problem: perhaps the objective tracker covers useful scenery, or your important frames sit too far apart. A clear problem gives you a way to judge the result. Moving everything simply because it is movable makes the review harder and can replace one obstruction with another.

Choose one area of the screen to improve first. For example, adjust the spacing around your action bars while leaving the minimap and chat alone. This is a suggested workflow, not a claim that one arrangement improves damage or reaction time for every player.

Open Edit Mode and select the right element

  1. Finish the activity that currently needs your attention and open the Esc menu.
  2. Enter Edit Mode and identify the element you want to change.
  3. If it is not selectable, inspect the available element checkboxes and advanced options.
  4. Select the supported frame to reveal its own settings, then make a small adjustment.
  5. Save the layout and leave the editor to check the result in ordinary use.

The Warcraft Wiki Edit Mode page explains that clicking a movable interface opens an additional menu for that particular interface. Do not expect every frame to offer identical controls. Look at the options shown for the selected element rather than following another player’s screenshot blindly.

Some elements must be enabled in the editor before they become convenient to arrange. Others appear under advanced options. That is different from enabling a gameplay feature elsewhere in Options: making a frame editable does not automatically change the underlying activity it represents.

Use a small decision table before changing more

What you see First check Practical next step
A frame cannot be selected Its editor checkbox or advanced option Enable the supported element and try selecting it again
The selected frame has unexpected controls Which element is selected Read that frame’s settings before changing anything
The layout feels crowded Spacing around your immediate task Undo the latest idea or reduce its scope
An imported layout is uncomfortable Whether it fits your own screen and habits Use it as a starting point rather than a finished answer

Evaluate readability outside the editor too. A tidy arrangement with no objectives displayed may become cluttered once normal information appears. Keep enough room for the tasks you actually do, and revisit the layout after seeing those tasks rather than arranging around an empty screen.

Save a recognizable layout before sharing or importing

Use the layout controls to preserve the arrangement you intend to keep. Give it a name that describes its purpose to you, such as a general questing layout, rather than a name that promises performance. After saving, leave the editor and confirm that the arrangement you expected is the one you are using.

The layout dropdown also provides sharing and importing options. Before importing, preserve your usable arrangement so you have a known reference. Read the import interface, confirm what you are importing, and inspect the result before relying on it. Treat another player’s layout as a proposal shaped by their display and preferences.

A talent import is a separate operation. The talent loadout guide covers that system. Likewise, changing your display does not update a saved equipment set; use the Equipment Manager guide when the problem is which items you equip.

Keep version history separate from present controls

Warcraft Wiki’s user interface history records Edit Mode as part of the patch 10.0.0 overhaul, released October 25, 2022. That is the feature’s introduction, not a statement that every old screenshot matches your current Retail client.

These two pages belong to the same publisher. Use the visible editor controls for the exact options available to you, especially advanced elements. This guide does not promise that every interface component can be moved, and it does not apply Retail instructions to Classic.

FAQ

Why can I move one frame but not another?

Check whether the other element is supported and enabled in Edit Mode. Different frames expose different settings. Do not interpret one missing control as proof that every part of the layout is broken.

Does importing a layout change my character build?

No: this workflow concerns the interface arrangement. Talent loadouts and equipment sets are separate systems. Check which import window you opened before pasting anything, especially when following several setup guides at once.

Should I keep an imported layout exactly as supplied?

Only if it suits you. First inspect readability and spacing in your own play. A useful layout makes the information you need easy to find; it does not need to reproduce someone else’s screen precisely.
