PoE 2 Skill Uses the Wrong Weapon Set? Diagnose Assignment and Auto-Swap

Unexpected weapon swaps often start with a skill's own weapon set assignment. Check equipped items, compatibility and Spirit, then compare manual and automatic swaps before treating an old patch fix as an explanation for today's symptom.

If a skill uses the wrong weapon set in Path of Exile 2, first inspect that skill’s weapon set assignment in its information panel and confirm that the assigned equipment is compatible. Automatic switching can be expected behaviour, not a fault. This troubleshooting guide is for players whose skill swaps weapons unexpectedly, fails to swap or stops working after a swap. Check the routing and requirements before replacing equipment or rebuilding your character.

The tests below are suggested diagnostic steps, not claims of a fresh client test. Menu controls can differ by platform, so use the skill information panel rather than relying on an unverified keyboard or controller shortcut.

Establish which behaviour should happen

The community Wiki’s weapon set page describes two independently equipped sets. By default, a skill uses the active set when possible, or automatically swaps to the other set when required to use the skill. The same page says each skill can be assigned one or both compatible sets.

That creates an important distinction. A skill allowed on both compatible sets does not need to leave the current set merely because the other one is your preferred damage setup. A skill assigned only to the opposite set is documented as triggering an automatic swap when used.

Observed symptom First comparison What it can clarify
Skill swaps away from the current set Inspect whether only the other set is assigned Expected routing versus an unexpected switch
Skill stays on the current set Check whether both compatible sets are enabled Default use of the active compatible set
Skill fails after swapping Compare weapon compatibility and requirements Equipment issue versus assignment issue
Persistent skill changes state Compare available Spirit in both sets Capacity difference versus a routing problem

Audit the actual equipment before changing settings

Look at what is equipped in Set I and Set II, including the items paired with each weapon. Do not infer compatibility from a weapon’s damage number or from the fact that a different skill works with it. Read the affected skill’s requirements against the equipment in each set.

For a hypothetical example, suppose a skill works with the equipment in Set II but not Set I. Pressing it while Set I is active may reasonably switch you to Set II. The first question is whether that matches the skill’s requirements and assignment, not whether the game has ignored your current weapon.

If you recently changed gear, the weapon upgrade comparison guide helps separate suitability from routing. A stronger item on paper does not settle whether the affected skill can use that equipment.

Run a small assignment test

Open the affected skill’s information panel and note its existing weapon set selection. Where compatibility permits, compare three configurations: Set I only, Set II only and both sets. Start each test from a known active set, use the same skill and record whether the active set changes.

Change only the assignment between these comparisons. If you replace weapons, supports and passives at the same time, you lose the ability to connect an outcome to one cause. Restore the original setting if the experiment does not resolve the symptom.

For example, if a compatible skill swaps to Set II when assigned there alone but stays on Set I when both sets are allowed, those outcomes match the documented distinction. They do not establish a broken auto-swap merely because both configurations feel different in combat.

Compare manual switching, then check Spirit

Use your platform’s configured weapon swap control to select each set manually, then try the affected skill. Record the selected set, whether the skill is available and any error message. Compare that with the automatic attempt. Manual success and automatic failure is a more specific report than skill broken.

Persistent skills need an additional branch of the investigation. The Wiki notes that weapon sets can have different available Spirit because of weapons, weapon set passives and persistent skill arrangements. Do not assume that a skill sustainable in one set has the same capacity available after a swap.

Try a compatible nonpersistent skill as a control, then review the Spirit reservation checklist if the problem is confined to persistent skills. This narrows the question without assuming every disabled skill is a support gem problem.

Use historical fixes as context, not a verdict

The official 0.5.5 patch notes fixed a bug allowing alternate set skills without the corresponding weapon swap. They also fixed Auras and Support Gems from an inactive weapon set continuing to apply. Those are documented historical fixes, not legitimate configuration tricks to recreate.

They also do not prove that every similar symptom today has the same cause or is already impossible. If the controlled tests still disagree with the documented assignment behaviour, record your current client version, platform, equipped sets, exact skill assignment and reproduction sequence. Include the actual error wording rather than labelling the issue with an old bug’s name.

Weapon set troubleshooting FAQ

Why does a skill stay on the weaker weapon set?

If both sets are compatible and allowed, the documented default favours the currently active set when possible. Check the skill’s specific assignment if you want it routed to one set rather than expecting an automatic damage comparison.

Can I keep inactive set Auras working without swapping?

Do not rely on that as a supported technique. The official 0.5.5 notes explicitly fixed inactive set Aura and Support Gem effects continuing to apply. Check current legitimate requirements instead of copying an old exploit demonstration.

Should I respec immediately if a skill fails?

No broad respec is justified by that symptom alone. Compare assignment, compatible equipment, manual switching and available Spirit first. These checks can produce a specific reproduction case without changing the rest of a working build.
