Before using currency on a Path of Exile 2 crafting base, verify two things independently: the current action can target this exact item, and a successful result would solve your equipment problem. This checklist is for players choosing between attractive drops, trade candidates and existing gear. It does not rely on a fixed crafting recipe or an assumed modifier outcome.
Write the finished item’s job first
Begin with a functional description rather than a rare modifier wish list. For a weapon, identify the skill it must support and the relevant weapon category. For defensive equipment, identify the gap it must cover without disabling other gear. A base that cannot perform the required job is not rescued by being cheap or visually impressive.
Separate mandatory properties from preferences. ‘Usable by this character and compatible with the intended skill’ is mandatory; ‘slightly more convenient attributes’ might be a preference. Use the weapon comparison guide when the base is intended to replace your main damage item. This defines what a worthwhile result would actually look like.
Run the eligibility gate on the exact item
Read the current action’s tooltip, then inspect the target. Match every condition it names, including item category, rarity or other state restrictions. Do not infer eligibility from another item with a similar name. If the interface provides target feedback, treat that as an additional check rather than a substitute for understanding the action.
- Is this the required item category and equipment type?
- Does its current rarity or state satisfy the action?
- Is it already altered in a way that limits the next step?
- Does the action describe a result you are willing to accept?
A failed eligibility check is a stop signal. Choose another base or another plan instead of spending resources on an unrelated preparatory action merely to keep the project moving.
Inspect item level without confusing it with requirements
Item level and the level required to equip an item answer different questions. Record both where available. The equipment requirement tells you whether your character can use it; item level may matter to the outcomes available under the current crafting system. A higher number is not automatically a better choice for your specific objective.
If you need a particular outcome, verify its current availability and any relevant item level condition before buying the base. Without that verification, describe the project as exploratory. Do not tell yourself that several attempts will compensate for an ineligible target. Currency cannot make a logically impossible plan more likely to succeed.
Treat requirements and corruption as hard constraints
Check level and attribute requirements against the character as it will exist after the swap. Removing an old item can also remove attributes needed by the replacement or another equipped piece. Inspect active skills afterward rather than assuming all dependencies are visible in one equipment comparison.
Read the item’s corruption status and any other restrictive state before deciding what can happen next. Do not assume a corrupted item accepts the same changes as an unrestricted base, or that a restrictive state can be undone. Check the current action explicitly. If an essential future step is blocked or unverified, reject the base for that project even when its existing properties look attractive.
Compare two candidates with a rejection table
Consider a hypothetical pair of armour bases. Candidate A has the appearance and defensive profile you prefer, but requires attributes you would lose by replacing your present item. Candidate B is less exciting but meets requirements and passes the intended action’s target check. Candidate B is the practical starting point unless you have a separately funded solution to A’s dependency.
Use a small table in your notes: candidate, hard blocker, extra equipment changes and maximum acceptable project cost. Mark unknowns as unknowns, not optimistic passes. The resistance swap checklist helps expose a replacement that improves one slot while weakening the complete setup.
Approve a project, not an endless sequence
Keep your working equipment untouched while testing whenever possible. Assign an allowance, define the minimum acceptable result and decide what ends the project. A usable result may be sufficient even if it is not the best theoretical outcome. An unsuitable result is a reason to reassess, not automatically to spend again.
Before the first action, read back the approval: correct job, eligible target, understood item level, usable requirements, checked restrictions and affordable failure. If any answer is missing, store the base and resolve that uncertainty first. Good base selection removes preventable mistakes before randomness or cost enters the decision.
